A church wedding ceremony at Lake Bled simply has to take place in the incredible St. Martin’s Parish Church. This venue is spiritually fulfilling, aesthetically pleasing, and set in the most romantic of locations.
According to Catholic tradition, Saint Martin was a former Roman soldier who used his cloak to cover a beggar. In Slovenia, this merciful saint is associated with the Feast of Saint Martin, observed on the 11th of November, in honour of the fist wine vintage of the season. This attributes St. Martin’s Parish Church, a place with an enviably long, rich history, with an even greater symbolic value.
The first chapel was built on the spot where St. Martin’s Parish Church stands today over 1000 years ago. The current neo-Gothic style was adopted in 1905 at the site of its 15th century predecessor. The artistic and architectural pieces in the church and its surroundings feature various styles and periods made from the finest Carrara marble. The interior was painted with frescoes between 1932 and 1937 by renowned academic painter Slavko Pengov.
Before WWII, the greatest Slovenian architect, Jože Plečnik, designed the wayside shrine that stands in the garden in front of the church. The preserved walls of the church date back to the 15th century. This was an important period in Slovene history – the time of the Turkish conquests, when people used to take refuge in churches all over the countryside.
Entering St. Martin’s Parish Church, you will be amazed at how every detail comes together to create a truly awe-inspiring nave. The marble altars, various sculptures, and huge pipe organs peering down from the back of the church, combined with a majestic chandelier, give this religious marvel a uniquely divine character and emphasize its profoundly spiritual dimension.
The ceiling and windows are both very high, which illuminates the church’s splendid interior and gives you a welcoming and empowering sense of optimism, befitting your special day. Your family and friends attending the wedding will feel the unifying presence of love touch their very souls. But most importantly, so will you, as you make your way down the aisle to be bound together forever in holy matrimony.
The wedding reception in the garden has a joyous, festive atmosphere, while the church’s surroundings with nearby Lake Bled offer incredible wedding photo opportunities. You can wander down to the lake, go on a horse and carriage ride, take a boat ride to Bled Island or even stroll up to the castle.
Getting married at St. Martin’s Parish Church in Bled will certainly be the unforgettable, heart-melting experience of your lifetime.
