Lake Bled cannot be mentioned in writing or depicted on images without its castle. Beside the church on the island and the lake itself, Bled Castle is the symbol of Bled and an immensely important part of Slovenian cultural heritage. In addition to its epically stunning features, both in terms of its position on a 130-metre cliff and its architecture, Bled Castle has an unbelievably long and amazingly rich history. Let’s travel back in time to see what makes this Bled wedding venue so ridiculously appealing.
Bled Castle is the oldest of its kind in Slovenia, as well as one of the best preserved. It dates back to the times of the German king Henry II and was first mentioned in the year 1011. Yes, you read that correctly, the place is over a thousand years old. The famous Slovene historian Valvasor, member of the Royal Society in London, mentions it in his 1689 masterpiece Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, appropriately calling it Castellum Veldes or "Castle on the Rock".
The castle’s original owners, the Bishops of Brixen, only visited their property occasionally, leasing to other prominent representatives of Europe’s well-to-dos, like the aristocratic Kreigh family who ended up living there for two hundred years. Baron Herbard Auersperg of Turja succeeded the Bled Castle as owner and was also the one who renovated it after the great earthquake of 1511.
Up until the 18th century, the castle was administered by nobles, followed by adherents of the middle class. For a short period during the French occupation, Bled Castle was even owned by Napoleon. It then passed through the hands of many owners, each adding their own touches to the castle’s already incredible charm.
The walls of Bled Castle, decorated with the images of coats-of-arms painted in fresco technique, are sure to hold many secrets. Also famous are the Castle Printing Works, which used to record historic records dating back centuries. An incredible feature in the courtyard is a 12-metre well, cut into live rock. The castle’s prestigious wine cellar stores wines of the highest-quality and the tower gallery features monthly exhibitions. There’s also a museum which presents us with the rich history of Lake Bled and the surrounding area.
Today, many cultural events take place at Bled Castle, like the Medieval Games which are organised in the courtyard during warmer months, the whole court bursting with excitement and rich tradition.
This medieval household has also hosted countless important state visits and numerous prominent guests have visited the court over the years. From movie stars to sports personalities, from royal dignitaries to heads of state, Bled Castle has welcomed them all. And now it’s time for this magical venue to host you and your beloved!
Wedding ceremonies are certainly the most glamorous events at Bled Castle. Its gorgeous gothic chapel, dedicated to the bishops St. Albuin and St. Ingenuin, is where couples throughout the centuries have taken their vows. Adorned with lovely baroque frescoes, the chapel is undeniably one of the most beautiful locations on the estate.
Nowadays, Bled Castle offers romantic civil ceremonies in the lovely Knight’s Hall. Walking down the aisle in this remarkable place steeped in history, one cannot help but feel the powerful spirit of the past resonating within its walls. To make the occasion even more special, your wedding certificates are printed in the old castle printworks.
If you choose Bled Castle as your wedding venue, you won’t only be treated like royalty, you will in fact become royalty. A luxurious medieval merry-making will be complemented with streams of sparkling wine and delicious specialties prepared in Bled Castle’s restaurant. The castle catering team consists of Slovenia’s top chefs, so you can expect nothing but perfection.
The exceptional atmosphere and surreal surroundings guarantee magnificent wedding photos, especially ones on the terrace overlooking Lake Bled. Nothing is too extravagant for royalty, and your wedding at Bled Castle will be forged in your memory for life.
Hear ye, hear ye, let the wedding bells ring!
